What writing, if any, was achieved amidst all the Christmas obligations/distractions?

Hello, this is your mod. I've finished cleaning up the tags for the new year.

I'm starting to notice that some people are using this community in an attempt to find an editor for their full, original novels - works 50,000+ words or more. I worry that [community profile] betaplease is being used to take advantage of beta-readers for commercial work. This is a space for fandom and fandom-adjacent works, and part of the spirit of fandom (on the fic side, anyway) is that we do not make money on our editing or writing.

After some thought, I've decided the rule is, if you are intending to publish your writing with the goal of making money, it does not belong here on [community profile] betaplease.

If you are publishing your work with the intent of making money, you should be paying an editor for a professional pass. This is for three reasons:

  1. If you are trying to make money on your work, asking someone else for free work so that you can profit is unjust and disrespectful.

  2. Frankly speaking, it is extremely unlikely that you are going to find any editors who are willing to edit a piece of that length for free. Even 10k can be exhausting, especially if you are expecting a professional level editing job.

  3. If you are publishing in a commercial capacity, then your work should get a more professional type of editing pass than what we here in this community can give for free. The amount of effort an editor is going to give a story of over 50,000 words, to a stranger, for characters they don't even know and aren't guaranteed to enjoy reading about, for free, is minimal. You and your readers deserve more than the bare minimum.

I myself have worked as a professional freelance editor for over 15 years. I made this community because I love editing and I love fandom, and I want to support both. Using this community to find free editing for commercial projects feels like you're not respecting editors and our craft. Editing, just like writing or art, is a skill that is honed through years of effort.

With that said, I am not banning original fiction, and any novel-length works posted to [community profile] betaplease before now will be allowed to remain. And of course, if you are looking for an editor for your 50,000+ word original fiction that you plan to publish on AO3 and are never going to try to make money on, by all means, you are welcome here. However, if I notice continued posts in this direction from this point on, I will return this space to being strictly focused on fandom works only. I have also updated the rules to be explicit on this point.

Thank you for reading, and thank you for always supporting this small community. Best wishes to your writing and editing adventures in the new year.

I'm still laughing about it. These are the projects I hadn't really mentioned yet, or not in a while. I'm having such a fun and joyful fandom time lately. I feel so lucky. I know these things ebb and flow, and people drift apart, life gets in the way, and so on. But I've posted about the lows before, and it feels only fair to record the highs, too :D Wishing everyone many many creative and joyful times.

soooo ...

google told me that dw allows users to have multiple journals under one account with easy switching between them. this would be so ideal for my compartmentalization dream & would allow me to start writing more.

but i can't find it in the faq.

any idea where to find this info or directions on how to use this feature? is it even real? D:

also happy holidays y'all!

Z.A.T.O. Log #2

I want to finish the game before Christmas, so while I was still a little shaken up by the game's events from the last time I played (and dealing with a fever/mild sickness induced a flu shot and a COVID shot my doctor uncle brought the family yesterday), I read for about an hour and a half to finish Marina's chapter (aka Chapter 2) and... It sure was a rollercoaster, huh.

There were a lot of interesting scenes this time around, most notably the ones with Asya, Marina and Vadim all going together around town trying to fulfil Marina's plans to find Ira. On hindsight, they were all very bittersweet, but what Asya said about that moment being one of a kind and something that'd gradually dull overtime really resonated with me, and I almost cried a few times when they're trying to comfort her during the movie.

Now, as to what happened to Ira... I had a lot of theories in my head that I alternated between I was playing. At first, I thought Asya had some sort of dissociative disorder, which would kind of explain some of the exchanges she had with herself or other characters (like when she realized that Vadim and the others were just picking on her and not trying to be her friend, the car repair shop scene or how the dialogue tag would only sometimes say "me"). Then, after I saw what was going on with Marina and Ira, I thought it could be some sort of metaphor for dissociation in general, or even depression. Finally, I thought it could be a meta-esque situation, with characters being aware of the game being all a bunch of code (I started thinking this when Marina mentioned "being aware of the code")...

... And then it turned out to be none of it, as Ira quite literally disappeared. I guess the entirety of the city isn't supposed to exist, huh... I'm not sure if I like that development, because I thought it'd be part of something more metaphorical rather than a literal "this town is a blip in the timeline", but that would explain a lot of what the game has been building on, like the whole "a wobbly line will end up looking straight the more you zoom out" thing, and all the monologues about anomalies and returning to the same as always.

Either way, I think I'm about 4 hours in, right before Chapter 3, so I still have a long way to go and many mysteries to uncover. We still don't know anything about Tosya, so I'm suppose this chapter will touch on it, as it'll be focused on Asya, according to the title, at least. It still amazes me how this whole game is free and was made in a short amount of time.

hi! i'm mike, but you can also call me fleur! she/fae pronouns. i'm a +21 jewish genderqueer demigirl and an amateur writer and beginner coder, happily taken as of 2022/02/14. i love writing and have been involved with fanfic since i was nine and writing on the back of my school homework sheets, and many years later i still continue to write. i'm a very shy person and i do have social anxiety and autism, so i communicate much better through writing fics and fandom-centric discussions.

access is typically given to mutuals or for those that i trust. i tend to post NSFW, occasional posts about my life, and other things that i typically wouldn't want a random stranger to see. you'll also find a lot of rambling outside of fandom topics, as well as some photography and headcanons.

my plan for this blog is to crosspost all of my AO3 works here, and to my personal website. this blog will contain NSFW topics and my philosophy is YKINMK (Your Kink is not My Kink)/Ship And Let Ship. if you disagree with this, or if you are under 18 or uncomfortable with dark works, i suggest not interacting with me. i'm not here for discourse or drama. leave that over on twitter.

edit 12/29/2025: i have a community for posting and crossposting fanworks now! you can follow [community profile] fleurseraphine for all things writing.

my primary interests right now are identity v and fire emblem: three houses, and those topics will nearly always come up. i do edit my profile to mirror my current special interests.

if you want access, feel free to comment below and we can get to know each other a little more.

Scrivener for fanfic, continued

I mentioned earlier in the year that I migrated to Scrivener for my fic projects as well. I've been finding my feet more and more with it, and slowly customising the interface in ways that tickle my brain just right. Thus I thought I'd record and share a snapshot of my current system!

I'm still using a single project for all fandoms. Sometimes I think about switching to a Scrivener project per fandom, especially when I start writing a multi-chap, then I go meh again... I dunno. I have a couple of fandoms I write a lot for, but more that will only ever have a couple of fics. And it's not necessarily clear from the start which will be which either. I think I'll continue this way until it feels too unwieldy. Or maybe if I start something that I know will be novel-length........... but even then?! Haha. Who knows.

This first organisational tidbit isn't particularly exciting. I renamed "Manuscript" into "Fic" and have a subfolder per fandom. Multi-chapter fics get their own subfolder, often with more under: one for the Story files, and then other files and/or subfolders for notes. Otherwise it's usually just a file under.

A few folders with fandom names, and folders and text files below each

Scrivener has a concept of a "Research" folder which is the only folder where you can include images and the like. I renamed that into Ideas and inspiration, and store screenshots and other inspiring pictures there.

A folder called "Ideas & More" with a few files and subfolders for fandom-specific inspiration

Then I can look at the thumbnails and remember why I love a particular ship, or feel inspired all over again by a particular scene XD >:D >:D

Note: Friends who I am DESPERATELY trying to drag down into the K-9 hole with me, hopefully to go nuts about that OT4 together, don't zoom in if you don't want spoilers ;)

A screenshot of a directory called "K-9 Inspiration" with 4 thumbnails below

And this is where things get fun )

I'm sure I'll continue to tweak and improve, but this system is working well for me at the moment, and also it makes me happy.

Hard to believe, but it's true: we're in the final stretch of 2025's Year-End Marathon. If my calculations are correct, this should put par at 24 days or 24 590 words, depending on your pledge type. Any way you look at it, that's a lot. If you're on par or ahead of the curve, congrats, you're amazing. If you've fallen behind, that's okay, too. You're trying and that also makes you amazing. Yes, even those who feel (rightly or wrongly) there is no way you can meet your pledge. Abuela is proud of all of you!

So as we enter this final stretch, how are things going? If you've hit your goal, are you going to keep going? If you haven't, do you have any strategies you intend to use to carve out writing time during this busy time of year? What can we do to help you, ahem, get your words out?

For myself, after (accidentally) hitting my goal in the first week of the month, I've let myself shift gears a bit to work on revising and rewriting, while also being very aware that the last half of this month was likely to be Very Tiring. Banking so many words in November definitely helped take the pressure off, but I'm going to keep at it for at least another week. For one thing, I've got some dangling ends I'd like to get settled before the new year!

Whether you're soaring ahead or trailing behind, the fact that you've tried at all is awesome. Writing is hard work! Writing in December is even harder! No matter how things have gone over the course of this marathon, I hope you've found it useful. And if you feel up for an even bigger challenge, pledging for 2026 is open! Pledging unlocks the full GYWO experience starting January 1st, so if you think you'd like to join us, we'd be happy to have you.

Whatever your holidays this busy season, we wish you the best. May your heart be full, your mind at peace, and your favorite beverage at the exactly right temperature.

Towards the matter of Naoya Zen’in, one third of my brain is like “I want to see this fucker die graphically and painfully. I want to set him on fire myself. I will figure out a way to kill this 2-D cuntfuck with my own two hands if I have to” and then another third is like “I need this man to fuck me so bad it’s making me look stupid, misgender me harder pleeezzzzesses” and then the last third is just like “I have a suggestion.”

I signed up for the Fannish 50 challenge at [community profile] goals_on_dw! For next year, I'll try my best to post 50 weekly playthrough logs for my ongoing games (Honkai Star Rail, Genshin Impact and LaDS). I have way too much quests and content to catch up on so this will be a good weekend activity for me as I attempt to clear up those exclamation marks in the UI and quest markers on the map. This is my first time participating and I'm excited~ Let's go!

i’ve talked about it all day nonstop, but my website is nearly complete! now i have to deal with the painstakingly slow process of moving all of my works over. :’)

i kind of wish i built this site way earlier, so i could just crosspost easier that way. i’m still learning html, i’m not 100% perfect but i’ve definitely gotten better.

i think my issue is memorizing certain characters(?), such as specifics related to backgrounds, radius, etc. but that’s where trial and error comes in.

come and check it out!

The Durin/Freminet fic has been completed and posted! I find writing oneshots very difficult, so I'm surprised I actually saw the idea I had through to the end. Thankfully, my partner also likes the ship, so they helped me edit/revise it a bit. I'd love to write more Durin ships, but we'll see if I ever get the time...

I also bought the FFXIII series on Steam today. I've been wanting to play the sequels, but it's been sooo long since I've played the first one that I thought I may as well replay it too. I was waiting for the winter sale so I could save some money though lol. My plan for winter break was to get a head start on some cosplans that my partner and I have, so I'll get around to playing them sometime in the coming year.

Speaking of 2026, I was wondering what kind of posts I should do for Fannish 50, and I think I will probably do BL reviews/recs? I mostly read manga, but maybe I'll also do some danmei novels. I have so many of both on my TBR list. But, I'll have to make posts for some of my favorites as well. I found Punks Triangle at the mall today and may have... impusively bought it. I've been wanting a physical copy for forever. This is a great opportunity to reread it and take notes for a post about it.

Episode 1: The Red Clan are looking for someone, SCEPTER4 opposes them, schoolboy Yashiro gets mistaken for the person they're looking for and gets rescued by a guy named Kurou only to have him turn his sword on him, calling him an evil king (aka the one who killed the Red Clan's leader). Meanwhile a naked catgirl is running around.

Hard rewatching this knowing what happens to Mikoto.

Ahh the English, always fun to listen to. XD Izumo's wasn't too bad, he's voiced by Sakurai Takahiro.

Fukuyama Jun really suits Misaki's character.

Love angela!!!

Ughh the cat is so cute.

Noo I can only hear Hetalia Italy when Yashiro speaks!!! Man, he doesn't even look that much like the person Red Clan are looking for and his voice is different. But I'm biased. Kurou was like a white night swooping in to save him, there was no need to hold him like that. 😂😉

Two people in a row assuming Yashiro is evil without even doing enough research. 😭
