Snowflake Challenge #8: Beloved Character

Obviously, I have to talk about Jyushi Aimono from Hypnosis Mic.
He was a difficult character to decipher during the time of his debut in 2019. He was officially described as a narcissist, and his occupation was stated to be a vocalist in a visual kei band. On paper, he read as a stereotypical 18 year-old brat. However, his first drama track appearance proved him to be otherwise, and it's what made me truly love him.
His first few lines in the track introduce his habit of talking in a confident and grandiose way, similar to the way chuunibyou characters typically act, but he soon begins to speak in his natural voice. It immediately becomes obvious that he is timid and anxious in actuality, and he speaks in a much higher, softer voice. The "chuuni" persona he puts on is just a front, allowing him to appear more confident than he is. But, why does he do this? Basically, he has a tragic backstory.

In the manga, we meet 14 year-old Jyushi. His parents spend more time working than being parents, so his primary caretaker is his grandmother. We see that he struggles with social anxiety at school, but he appears to make a new friend through their mutual interest in a particular visual kei band. They bond by going to karaoke with other classmates, and Jyushi's singing voice receives high praise from everyone. His new friend, now mad with jealousy, begins to harass Jyushi. Embarrassing things are written about him on the class chalkboard, insults are scribbled on his desk, and he's even cornered in the bathroom and has spoiled milk thrown all over him. Jyushi copes with all of this by taking on a stage-like persona, similar to his favorite visual kei vocalist, whenever he has to confront his ex-friend and his cronies.
Eventually, the bullies go to Jyushi's house while he isn't home, and they lure his grandmother out by stealing Jyushi's precious plush pig, Amanda. His grandmother is the one who made the plushie for Jyushi, so this upsets her and she goes after them. They let up by throwing Amanda into the street for her to retrieve, but Jyushi's grandmother is hit by a vehicle. She doesn't survive. Now with his (seemingly) only support system gone, Jyushi's feelings of depression hit a tipping point, and he attempts to jump off a tall building. A lawyer, who would later become an important friend of his, reaches him in time and convinces him not to.
To me, Jyushi's appeal is that he is determined to persevere despite his past hardships continuing to trouble him. He also wishes to better himself, so he doesn't have to be so anxious around new people and can rely less on others. Of course, he has a very cute design and personality going for him, too. He is known for being kind, and he is generally upbeat when he isn't feeling self-conscious. Overall, I find him to be a very relatable, comforting character.

Like I mentioned, HypMic is the fandom I never really got into, so I knew little about Jyushi beyond his name and his profession as a visual kei singer.
However, your write-up is so moving and heartfelt that it made me go and find a subbed version of the 3 songs from the MTR vs BAT battle (they are on my playlist). I finally understand why Jyushi sounds like that & says what he says at the beginning of the BAT song. I certainly gained some new appreciation for his character!

Date: 2025-02-08 07:18 pm (UTC)The lines hit hard even without knowing their exact backstory, so I can't imagine how impactful they would be when you know all their histories!
I was really amazed by the three songs from the BAT vs MTR battle (so I added them to my playlist!) because Light & Shadow seemed more like an intense philosophical debate rather than a hostile rap battle. Whoever the lyricist is, they are so good at this.
