⏾ 003: FFVII Laughs

As of writing this, I'm in the middle of the Temple of the Ancients part of FFVII Rebirth, and I've been taking a minute to process what they did in the remake versus the original so far. I could make several posts about my thoughts on that, but one thing that's staying with me about FFVII in general is just how unexpectedly comical it is. Of course, I expected it to be lighthearted at times, but I did grow up with Kingdom Hearts— my perception of the amount of silliness in video games is likely skewed. But I like how a game that explores such serious themes and problems that can be directly paralleled to real life can be so hilarious at times and still feel so profound. It's an interesting change of pace compared to me having grown up with a game series that is so silly foremost but demands you take its plot seriously as almost an afterthought. 

There were a few things I was really hoping to see again in Rebirth that were just so funny to me in the original. 

Firstly, the DOLPHIN. I was going to be so upset if I didn't get to see ultra high definition Cloud riding a dolphin. I remember seeing that in the original and laughing so much. The minigame feel of it was odd, but I got what I wanted so I won't complain!

Also, I'm so obsessed with Vincent, which may become obvious the longer I use this journal. When I saw that they kept his little flying backflip when his coffin is opened, I was so excited. It felt like such a silly thing in the original, but he looked so majestic in Rebirth. However, I do think there is something to be said about how dramatic of an entrance it seemed for a guy who has such a quiet and somewhat distant personality. That in and of itself is pretty funny to me. 

I was very happy about getting to the Gold Saucer date and seeing that you do in fact get a scene of the main cast acting in Loveless. It was incredibly amusing to me, but what surprised me was that you can choose who Cloud's character "loves." And, for some reason Barret was an option. I had to choose him, because I had to see what his reaction would be and I wasn't disappointed LOL. 

I'm definitely forgetting some other scenes that were hilarious to me (especially with Yuffie, because she's so funny and it's everything to me), but these stuck with me in both the original and Rebirth.

I'm very glad that the remake is keeping in so much of the silly stuff from the OG. (And going so far as to add even more silly stuff, like that frog side quest and the bit with those dumb Cactuar statues.) I was so happy to see the dolphin in the trailers for Rebirth sjdfhksjfs. I feel like a lot of FF7 is just inherently funny even when they're trying to be serious... I'm hoping they keep the snowboarding in the next game lol

The snowboarding! God, I hope so. I avoided trailers and such for Rebirth since I wanted to be surprised, but I'm very much looking forward to playable Vincent and Cid and might not be able to contain myself before the next one releases lol.

I'm sooo excited to have Cid and Vincent in the party, I was sad they were only tag-along characters in Rebirth. #1 Cid stan 4 lyfe etc etc.

In terms of favorites, Cid is really up there for me too. I'm looking forward to what they do with his playstyle.

I looove dragoons so I really hope they lean into that for his playstyle. Though in Rebirth I usually ended up defaulting to Yuffie for battles because I prefer long-range styles so. Maybe I'll end up playing as Vincent more haha. Very excited either way to see what they do!!
