Happy holidays to everyone!

I spent part of my day tagging along with my spouse while they got tattoos. Coincidentally, I've been eyeing the work by another artist at the same shop, so I decided to make an appointment with them for early January while we were there. I technically shouldn't be spending that much money, but I think it's okay to treat myself for once. January is also my birthday month, and the tattoo is something I've wanted for a while. It will be Free! (anime) related, because that series is near and dear to my heart.

While I was waiting for my partner, I ended up finishing Volume 5 of the No.6 novel series. I've been slowly working my way through all of them, and every time I get back to it, I feel my love for No.6 (and specifically, Nezushi) being reignited. Reading the novels just offers so much more insight to the characters and their relationships with each other. Being able to see Shion's inner thoughts about Nezumi and vice versa has been making me feel deranged.

There is so much yearning that you just don't get to see in the anime. A part I loved in this novel specifically was when Nezumi and Shion are surrounded by death and destruction, but just looking at and hearing Nezumi's voice comforts Shion in a moment of doubt, to the point where he imagines sitting in the grass with him under a bright, blue sky. It killed me, to say the least.

Anyway, at our house, we won't be doing much in terms of celebration other than eating really, but I hope everyone is able to enjoy their holiday :)

It's been a while since I read the light novels (and I was a teeny-tiny bit disappointed, but only because I was hoping it would continue after where the anime leaves off :D). I should do a re-read, although I also have an extremely tall pile of books to read waiting for me too XD That series and those characters were so so cool, lots of fondness whenever I think about No. 6 :)

I try to make a point to read the novelizations of anime adaptations since like you said you miss out on so much subtext. No.6 is one that I think is almost required reading because I think if I hadn't I'd feel almost cheated at not knowing nearly as much as the soulbond these two have. And of course it's so good.

(I was trying to do this with MDZS after watching all the anime in a group Discord party but got a bit lazy about it and stopped... I should really get back to it!)

On the bright side, there is a continuation for the series now at least LOL. I feel that about the long TBR list though, but it is such a good read…

I remember being inconsolable after finishing the No.6 anime as a young teen, and I seriously wish younger me had read these novels back then.

I actually have only finished the MDZS novel and nothing else lmao. I do recommend it!! I’m sure the anime isn’t quite as explicit about their relationship 🤔 The yearning is soo good though.
